Description
Feijoa fruit is characterized by its distinctive shape and flavor. Feijoas are greenish-yellow or pale green, ellipsoid, egg-shaped fruits that about 2-3 inches in length. The skin is thin and often slightly rough, with a slightly waxy texture. The inside flesh is creamy-white to pale yellow and has a jelly-like consistency. The flesh is juicy and is divided into a clear, small, edible, gelatinous seed pulp that are soft and typically not bothersome when consumed and a firmer, slightly granular, opaque flesh nearer the skin.
The feijoa fruit has a sweet, aromatic and unique flavour. It is often described as a blend of various tropical fruits, including pineapple, guava, and strawberry. The taste is tangy, sweet, and slightly aromatic, with a hint of acidity. Some people also note a subtle mint or eucalyptus-like undertone to its flavor profile. But, feijoa has a potent, vigorous, and individual smell due to methyl benzoate and related compounds that exist in the fruit.
Feijoas matures in autumn, are typically harvested when they are fully ripe, as they do not continue to ripen after being picked. When ripen, fruit falls to the ground and at its fullest flavour. But it is picked from the tree prior to falling to prevent contusing. To enjoy the fruit, the skin is usually cut or peeled off, and the flesh can be eaten raw. Feijoas are popular in various culinary preparations. Pulp of feijoa fruit is also used in some natural cosmetic products as an exfoliant.
